Oleksandr Pielieshenko

Oleksandr Yuriyovych Pielieshenko was a distinguished Ukrainian weightlifter born on January 7, 1994. Oleksandr demonstrated exceptional prowess in the sport, claiming the title of European Champion in 2016 and 2017. He showcased his talents on the global stage at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, finishing fourth in the 85 kg category.
Oleksandr's career faced challenges when he was provisionally suspended in 2018 after testing positive for a banned substance, leading to a ban from competition. Despite these setbacks, his contributions to weightlifting remained significant, highlighted by his performances at major championships.
Tragically, Oleksandr's life took a heroic turn when he joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces at the onset of the Russian invasion in February 2022. He was killed in action on May 5, 2024, marking a profound loss not only to the sports world but also to his nation. Oleksandr was the first Olympian to be killed in the Russo-Ukrainian War, remembered for his dedication to both his sport and his country.
Throughout his career, Oleksandr left an indelible mark on the world of Olympic weightlifting, with his performances still resonating in the memory of sports enthusiasts around the globe.
